Bissell Brothers: Portland, ME

Derek and I went to the old Bissell Brothers tasting room back in the spring of 2016. At the time, they were moving locations soon, so the tasting room was starting to get cleaned up and cleared out. We were anxiously awaiting for the new tasting room to open, but hadn't gotten a chance to check it out until December when we had our staycation.

We were pretty impressed with the newer tasting room. It was much, much larger than their old tasting room. There was an entire lower level tasting room and brewery, and an upper level "deck" which overlooked the working brewery. It was beautiful, and everything you want in a brewery.

We made our way up to the counter and ordered a couple beers. Derek ordered Swish, which is one of the beers the brewery is most known for. I ordered two smaller samples: Bucolia and Umbra. Derek also ordered some beer swag and picked up a black trucker hat with the amazing logo on it in white stitching.

We took our beers up to the upper level deck and watched the canning machine can new beers. It was pretty cool to be able to watch the beer being put in cans as we sipped on the brews that came right from there.

I rated Bucolia a 2.75 on Untaped. I'm not a huge fan of hoppy beers, and this one was way too hoppy for my liking, so I am sure someone else would rate it much higher. My rating was more personal to my own taste buds. I noted that it had floral hints and was a bit spicy.

I rated Umbra a 3.75. It was very dark and had notes of oatmeal and coffee. This is definitely a filling beer. I think if I were to drink a full glass, I would only be able to have one.

Derek loved his Swish. It was delicious and held up to all the hype about it. He claims Swish to be one of his favorite beers. It has a really nice hop profile. It's very smooth, and it has a clear, nice finish.

We really liked Bissell Brothers and will be back again. The tasting room was awesome, and we would love to go back in warmer weather when we can venture to the outside patio and enjoy a drink in the sunshine.
